A Journey Beyond Reality

February 27, 2025 by Lyndsey Gilchrist

There’s something about fantasy that calls to the soul. Maybe it’s the magic, the adventure, or the chance to step into a world where the impossible becomes reality. For me, writing fantasy isn’t just about telling stories—it’s about discovering them, breathing life into them, and losing myself in the worlds I create.

The Magic of Worldbuilding

Every time I sit down to write, I feel like an explorer mapping out uncharted lands. There’s a thrill in crafting kingdoms with ancient secrets, cities built on floating islands, or forests whispered about in old legends. But what makes these worlds real isn’t just the grand landscapes—it’s the small details. The traditions of a hidden village, the lullabies sung to children before bed, the taste of a rare fruit only found in the mountains. These are the pieces that make a world feel lived in, not just imagined.

Characters Who Refuse to Be Silent

Some writers meticulously plan their characters before writing, but mine tend to introduce themselves unexpectedly—sometimes with a smirk, sometimes with a burden too heavy to carry. They come to me with scars, with hopes, with choices they regret. And once they arrive, they won’t let me rest until I tell their stories. There’s the reluctant hero, not because they doubt their strength, but because they fear what power will make them. There’s the villain who believes, in the depths of their heart, that they are the true saviour. There’s the wanderer, searching for a place to belong, only to discover home was within them all along.

Why Fantasy?

Fantasy at its core is an externalisation of the internal world. Our hopes and fears become dragons and wraiths. Our hope for the future, magic and heroes. The best Fantasy, indeed all Fantasy should hold a mirror up to us and show us the best and worst of us. Our impulsiveness and out bravery. Our darkest fears and our shining soul. Dare you read anything else?

What draws you to fantasy? Let’s talk about it in the comments—I’d love to hear your story!
